Ten Days in Tunisia

Day 1
|
Upon arrival at Tunis-Carthage airport, Atlantis greeters will ensure that you are settled comfortably in the hotel of your choice, in the city or at the beach.

Day 2
After breakfast, one of Atlantis' comfortable vehicles will take you to the ancient Roman city of Bulla Regia, which is renowned for its underground villas with impeccably preserved floor mosaics, as well as for its basilicas and baptistery. Then drive to Dougga where you will tour the Roman city the baths, temples, theatres, and miles of paved streets of which lie atop a hill surrounded by fields of grain and olive orchards. After lunch at Thugga restaurant, continue on to Kairouan, the fourth holiest city of Islam, which was founded in 631. Visit the Sidi Sahbi Mosque and enjoy wandering through the markets of the Medina before dinner.

Day 3
|
After breakfast, you will enjoy a visit to the majestic Great Mosque of Kairouan, the oldest in North Africa. Then travel on to Sbeitla, and discover its temples, baths, theatres and triple temples honoring Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. Relax over lunch at the Bakni Restaurant and continue south to Tozeur. Spend the night at Dar Cheraiet, a museum-hotel which is a faithful reproduction of a Nineteenth Century Tunisian palace.

Day 4
After feasting on traditional and international breakfast specialties, you will visit the old city of Tozeur with its distinctive decorative brickwork and covered streets and then tour the lush oasis which surrounds it. Lunch in the charming period restaurant of Dar Cheraiet and then cross Tunisia's spectacular salt lake, known as the Chott El Jerid. When you arrive at Douz, take a camel ride across the rolling dunes, golden in the setting sun.

Day 5
Following breakfast, travel on to the unique town of Matmata, whose inhabitants have built elaborate underground homes, which gained renown in the film Star Wars. After lunch at the Troglodytes Hotel, continue to the Berber village of Toujane. Your next stop is the spendid settlement of Chenini, with its Berber dwellings cut high into the cliffs. End the day in Tatouine in the charming comfort of the Sangho Tataouine Hotel.

Day 6
After breakfast, drive through the Berber Ksour, or fortified villages, to the intriguing hill top labyrinth of the Ksar Haddada. Feast on local specialties at the Ibis Medinine Restaurant before traveling on to the legendary home of the lotus-eaters, the Island of Jerba, where you will check into a hotel of your choice for a two-day stay.

Day 7
After breakfast, admire the sculpted white village mosques and visit the fine synagogue and pilgrimage site at Ghirba. Spend the rest of the morning shopping in the colorful, lively markets of Houmt Souk before sitting down to lunch at Haroun Restaurant. Spend a free afternoon watching the sunset on the Mediterranean from the beach, balcony or pool of your hotel.

Day 8
Bid farewell to Jerba after breakfast and head north to the thriving cities of Gabès and Sfax, where you will visit the walled Medina. Following lunch at Sfax Center, drive north to visit the Roman Coliseum of El Jem, and imagine it filled with 20,000 spectators. Continue on to Sousse, where you can stroll around Port Kantaoui, just beyond the doors of your hotel.

Day 9
|
After breakfast at your hotel in Sousse, travel north to Nabeul, the famous city of potters founded by Andalusian Muslims and Jews fleeing from Spain. Next you will visit Carthage, which was founded by Phoenician Queen Dido in the 9th Century BC. In that past Phoenician city, you will visit the twin ports, which bear witness to Punic seafaring genius, and the enormous seaside bath of Antonius. Above the sea on Byrsa Hill, you will see the remains of the Punic settlement under the Roman ruins and visit the remarkable Carthage National Museum.

Day 10
|
Start the morning with breakfast and the visual treat of the world's largest collection of Roman mosaics at the Bardo Museum. Then take a walking tour of the Medina of Tunis, a center of life, learning, craft and trade since its foundation at the end of the 7th century. After lunch in Tunis, transfer to the Tunis-Carthage airport for departure.

Tour Tunisia and Planet Tataouine with Atlantis

Come to Tunisia to tour the key Star Wars and English Patient sites in the company of those who worked as cast and crew. Day 1: After flying into Tunis, tour the Medina and spend the night. Day 2: Take an early morning flight to Jerba. Travel around the island making special stops at Star Wars locations before taking the ferry to the mainland. Visit Star Wars locations in the distinctive underground buildings of Matmata. Day 3: Visit the fortified Ksour of Tataouine and Mednine before heading into the desert. Day 4: Drive through the desert and cross the mysterious Chott El Jerid to Tozeur, visiting Star Wars and English Patient sites along the way. Visit the Dar Cheraiet Museum and Fantasy Park. Day 5: Spend all day reliving the films by visiting locations in the desert. Enjoy Bedouin hospitality and a desert feast in a traditional tent under the stars. On Day 6 you can either return to Tunis for the flight to Europe and the USA or carry on to Chebika, Tamerza and Mides to visit English Patient sites. Day 7: Depart on the early morning flight for Tunis. Four and five star accommodations are available through your tour, including in your tent at the Pan Sea Camp at Ksar Ghilane. For student travelers, Atlantis can arrange accommodations in youth hostels and traditional Berber tents.
