Tunisia is a museum country, the ideal place to explore treasures of three millennial of Mediterranean history within a limited geographical space.
Tunisia’s historical background can be divided into traditional historical periods. However, this does not do justice to the the cournty's cultural abundance. Tunisia is in fact a living demonstration of how newer cultures borrow from, build on and overlap older ones. We see, for example, how the culture of the seafaring Phonecians from the Levant was transformed by Berber and Lybic influences to produce a distinctive Punic culture.

When Punic Carthage fell to the Romans, the victors adopted various Punic building techniques and used Punic agricultural science to feed the Roman Empire.
In the early Christian period, a figure as towering as Saint Augustine was still speaking a Punic dialect.
As Islam radiated from Kairouan to other parts of the land that is modern Tunisia, Byzantine fine basicilas were still being built.
